Medicare Rules & Referral Form

Referral Form

Do I Need a Referral?

To receive a Medicare rebate for your child’s audiology appointment, you must have a valid referral from a GP or medical specialist addressed to Kids Hearing.

Important Things to Know

  • A new referral is required for every appointment. Audiology referrals do not last 12 months.

  • Medicare does not limit the number of audiology appointments your child can attend each year.

  • Appointments can be scheduled as often as clinically needed — however, each visit that is claimed through Medicare requires a new referral.

  • Please ensure the referral is:

    • Correctly addressed to Kids Hearing

    • Dated

    • Provided before or at the time of your appointment

    • Please Note: Medicare rebates do not apply to wax management (ear wax removal).

Mixed Billing Fee Schedule

We are a mixed billing service. Some patients may be eligible for reduced fees or bulk-billed appointments. Please contact us to discuss your options—we’re always happy to help

We will offer your child a reduced rate or Bulk Billed appointment.

Our Ethos & Service Guarantee

With over 16 years of experience in paediatric hearing health, we ensure your child receives the care they deserve. Each appointment runs for 60 minutes, allowing time for comprehensive, age-appropriate hearing testing, careful interpretation of results, and clear discussion with parents—without rushing.

Why a small gap fee helps us do more

To maintain the quality, safety, and thoroughness of our assessments, a gap fee applies to most appointments. This supports longer appointment times, comprehensive testing, and personalised care for every child.

We aim to keep our services accessible and offer bulk billing or reduced fees where eligibility criteria are met. Please reach out if you’d like to discuss your options.

Thank you for your understanding and for trusting us with your child’s hearing care.

Clear Pricing

Transparent Pricing

We believe in transparency, so our pricing is clear and upfront. Please note the following is a general guide, and the rebate amount is determined by your referring medical practitioner and the specific assessment requested.

*Please be aware that Medicare does not offer rebates for school hearing screenings or ear wax removal.

Reasons your child or teen may need a hearing assessment

Hearing plays a critical role in academic learning. Hearing issues are invisible.

Unlike adults, Children and Teens will not say “I can’t hear.” Instead, they might seem inattentive, have trouble focusing, struggle academically or appear to have behavioural or learning difficulties. It's a process of elimination and a hearing (and vision check) should be the first step in the evaluation of your Child and Teen's health and development. It’s a simple process with no harm — and only potential benefit — helping to rule out underlying issues early and ensuring your child has every opportunity to succeed.

Transition to School Check

The NSW government recommends Eyes, Ears and Dental check before starting school.
